What is Diabetic retinopathy ?

  • This is a condition which occurs to one with Diabetes.
  • The light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye called the retina is damaged.
  • The retina is the light-sensitive layer that covers the back of our eyes and needs a constant supply of blood to keep it healthy.
  • Diabetic retinopathy occurs when high blood sugar levels start to damage these blood vessels.

Classification of Diabetic retinopathy

Classified according to ophthalmoscopic findings:

  • Background diabetic retinopathy.
  • Pre-proliferative diabetic retinopathy.
  • Proliferative diabetic retinopathy.

Symptoms of Diabetic retinopathy
  • Gradually worsening vision
  • Sudden vision loss
  • Shapes floating in your field of vision (floaters)
  • Blurred or patchy vision
  • Eye pain or redness

Diagonsis of Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy can be picked up during retina examination by your local Optometrists.
