What is Macular degeneration ?

  • Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is an eye disease that affects central vision.

There are two types:

  • Dry AMD is caused by the gradual break down of light-sensitive cells in the macula (the central area of the retina at the back of the eye) over several years.
  • Wet AMD is caused by the growth of blood vessels underneath the macula, which can leak or cause scarring.

What causes age-related macular degeneration?
  • Old age
  • Smoking
  • Family history
  • Obesity
  • Gender
  • Race


What are the symptoms of Macular degeneration?
  • Asymptomatic in early stages
  • Scotoma (black spot in central vision)
  • Poor near vision
  • Metamorphopsia (straight lines appear wavy)
